Golden Award from the DLG

Our unfiltered Kräuterland Black Cumin Oil was awarded the gold DLG seal in 2023 (see product images).

Please understand that, for environmental reasons, we are still using the old labels without the 2023 DLG seal. However, you will still receive freshly pressed black cumin oil from our mill every day.

Where Does Black Cumin Come From?

The black cumin plant, known botanically as Nigella sativa, originates from the Orient and is often mistaken for black pepper due to its similar appearance. However, black cumin seeds have been widely used by Arabs for thousands of years in various ways. The seeds are a staple in the kitchen and are particularly known in our regions for being used on flatbread. Even in Asia, black onion seeds are highly valued and frequently used.

True black cumin belongs to the buttercup family and is not related to cumin or caraway. However, there is a species in Europe known as “garden black cumin” or Nigella damascena, which resembles true black cumin. This plant, commonly found in southern Europe, can also thrive in local gardens.

Just like true black cumin, European black cumin is an annual herbaceous plant highly valued in herbal medicine. True black cumin has small hairs on the upper parts of the plant and faintly striped stems. It also has feathery leaves, which are absent in European black cumin.

Harvesting Black Cumin

The fruit capsules form after the plant blooms in July and August. The plant gradually dies off, and when the capsules turn brown, they are ready for harvest. Harvesting must take place before sunrise to avoid dew or mist on the plants, ensuring a dry harvest.

The entire plants are cut and laid out on clean, dry cloths. The black cumin seeds are matte and range from brown to black in color. Once dried, the seeds are threshed and sent to oil mills for processing into black cumin oil.

Only a few people get the chance to experience the threshing of black cumin. During this time, the air is filled with a unique aroma, as the seeds have a slight anise scent that is fully released during threshing, creating a festive, Christmas-like smell.

In the oil mills, the threshed seeds are cleaned and then pressed. Increasingly, oil mills are focusing on high-quality production, ensuring absolute purity and a premium-quality oil. Black cumin farmers have also embraced this by avoiding pesticides and chemical additives, ensuring that the oil maintains its top-tier quality.

Application and Dosage of Black Cumin Oil

Black cumin oil is highly versatile and can be used both internally and externally. It also makes a great seasoning, enhancing dishes in a special way. It can even be added to tea, though only after the tea has cooled. Of course, black cumin oil can also be consumed on its own, though not many people do so because of its strong and bitter taste.

For inhalation, add about two tablespoons of Kräuterland Black Cumin Oil to one liter of hot water. Inhale the vapors under a towel. The hot water releases the essential oil vapors, which can have a soothing effect.

For pure consumption, about 40 to 80 mg of black cumin oil is recommended per kilogram of body weight. This is approximately 25 drops or about one tablespoon. This dosage can be divided into two to three smaller doses. If the taste is too strong, you can mix the oil with honey or opt for black cumin oil capsules, which have a neutral taste.

Composition

100% pure, unfiltered organic black cumin oil from controlled organic cultivation.

Side Effects of Black Cumin Oil

Black cumin oil has almost no side effects and is generally well-tolerated. Even children can take this valuable oil.

However, as with all herbal remedies, black cumin oil can cause unwanted reactions. People prone to allergies should monitor their bodies carefully when taking it. If reactions occur, stop consumption immediately.

Occasionally, it may cause mild burping, but this is not harmful.

Pregnant women should avoid consuming black cumin oil, as the essential oils it contains can induce labor.

Additionally, black cumin oil should not be taken on an empty stomach.

Shelf Life and Storage

To ensure protection from light, we deliver our black cumin oil in a dark glass bottle. Store the bottle in a dry, cool place. To avoid oxidation, always keep the bottle tightly sealed after opening and use it promptly. An unopened bottle is shelf-stable for five to six months after opening. Sediment or cloudiness does not affect the quality of the oil.

Our black cumin oil has a minimum shelf life of 18 months.

Notes

At cold temperatures, edible oils can freeze or form clumps. This is a completely normal and harmless process. To restore the oil to its liquid state, simply leave it at room temperature for a few hours or place it on a heater for a few minutes. This will not affect the quality of the oil.

Shake the bottle well before use.
